Android Simple Listview with Search Example

Android ListView is a view which groups several items and display them in vertical scrollable list. The list items are automatically inserted to the list using an Adapter that pulls content from a source such as an array or database.

Listview XML:

<ListView android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/list"></ListView>

An adapter actually bridges between UI components and the data source that fill data into UI Component. Adapter holds the data and send the data to adapter view, the view can takes the data from adapter view and shows the data on different views like as spinner, list view, grid view etc.

The ListView and GridView are subclasses of AdapterView and they can be populated by binding them to an Adapter, which retrieves data from an external source and creates a View that represents each data entry.

Android provides several subclasses of Adapter that are useful for retrieving different kinds of data and building views for an AdapterView ( i.e. ListView or GridView). The common adapters are ArrayAdapter,Base Adapter,CursorAdapter, SimpleCursorAdapter,SpinnerAdapter andWrapperListAdapter. We will see separate examples for both the adapters.

A simple array adapter where you don’t even have to create a Adapter class android gives you as agift predefined adapter so lets use it

Its only works for simple single label listeview

ArrayAdapter adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,, mobile_phones);

Here is your MainActivity  Code:

package info.infiniteloops;

import android.os.Bundle;
import android.text.Editable;
import android.text.TextWatcher;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.AdapterView;
import android.widget.ArrayAdapter;
import android.widget.EditText;
import android.widget.ListView;
import android.widget.Toast;

public class Simple_Listview extends AppCompatActivity {
    String[] mobile_phones = {"Android","IPhone","WindowsMobile","Blackberry","WebOS","Ubuntu","Windows7","Max OS X"};
    ArrayAdapter adapter;
    EditText search;
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        // Define a new Adapter
        // First parameter - Context
        // Second parameter - Layout for the row
        // Third parameter - ID of the TextView to which the data is written
        // Forth - the Array of data

        adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,, mobile_phones);
        search =(EditText) findViewById(;
        final ListView listView = (ListView) findViewById(;
        listView.setOnItemClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() {

            public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view,
                                    int position, long id) {

                // ListView Clicked item index
                int itemPosition     = position;

                // ListView Clicked item value
                String  itemValue    = (String) listView.getItemAtPosition(position);

                // Show Alert
                        "Position :"+itemPosition+"  ListItem : " +itemValue , Toast.LENGTH_LONG)

        search.addTextChangedListener(new TextWatcher() {

            public void onTextChanged(CharSequence cs, int arg1, int arg2, int arg3) {
                // When user changed the Text

            public void beforeTextChanged(CharSequence arg0, int arg1, int arg2,
                                          int arg3) {
                // TODO Auto-generated method stub

            public void afterTextChanged(Editable arg0) {
                // TODO Auto-generated method stub

Here is you main_layout.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="" xmlns:tools="" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:paddingBottom="@dimen/activity_vertical_margin" android:paddingLeft="@dimen/activity_horizontal_margin" android:paddingRight="@dimen/activity_horizontal_margin" android:paddingTop="@dimen/activity_vertical_margin" tools:context="info.infiniteloops.Simple_Listview">
    <EditText android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:hint="Search" android:id="@+id/search"/>
    <ListView android:layout_below="@+id/search" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/list"></ListView>
